Micro Needling 101

The latest skincare trend is… drumroll please, sticking tiny needles repeatedly in your face!             *p-tssssh * That was a sound effect in case you missed it. You’re probably wondering what torture methods the world will think of next in the name of beauty, but it’s hardly as bad as it sounds. I promise. You don’t even know there are teeny tiny needles punching into your face.

This teeny tiny needle treatment is called micro needling and it works on the basis of causing controlled inflammation to rejuvenate and restore the skin. Think less fine lines and wrinkles, improved hydration, less pigmentation and improved scar appearance.

How does it work?

The skin is prepped with a topical anaesthetic, so you really don’t feel anything. I use Dermapen – an advanced micro needling device that pierces the skin vertically, creating more precise micro wounds and channels, unlike traditional micro needling rollers. The needle depth is selected depending on the area of the face being treated and the skin concern we’re addressing.

The needles create small wounds that trigger the skin’s repair mode. The skin reacts by generating new and healthy collagen. The micro wounds also act as tiny channels for serums to be absorbed deeper into the skin. I use two fantastic serums to encourage healthy collagen regeneration which is applied before I start the Dermapen treatment.

The Essel Stem Cell Elixir is a powerful skin repairing serum. The ingredients increase the skin’s ability to repair and regenerating healthy cells making it ideal to use in combination with micro needling. The results are brighter, firmer and glowing skin.

The Aesthet Recovery Serum is specially designed for post treatments and is usually recommended for patients that have undergone plastic surgery, chemical resurfacing, laser treatment and now micro needling.

Both these serums can also be purchased through me to use for at-home care.

What does micro needling treat?

Micro needling treatments can reduce fine lines and wrinkles, smoker’s lines, pigmentation, acne scarring and skin laxity. It’s also great for all over tightening and rejuvenation of the skin.

Why do I love microneedling?

It is minimally invasive, no downtime is required and you really see results.

How soon will you see improvement and what results can you expect?

The number of treatments you require will really depend on what skin concerns we’re addressing. But you will definitely start seeing an improvement after the first few treatments. Each microneedle session is performed 4 to 8 weeks apart and keep in mind that the final results cannot be seen immediately because new collagen continues to be laid down for approximately 3-6 months after treatment.

What’s In A Palette – Smitten with MUD

As a make-up artist, I rely on versatile eyeshadow palettes. They give me the freedom to create different looks without having to lug a gazillion single eye-shadows around.

I recently received the Smitten Eye Palette from MUD and this is my review… heads-up I’m smitten:

  • The pigment concentration is really good – a little eyeshadow goes a long way.
  • The colour lasts all day, the pigment didn’t shift, fade or end up under my eyes. Even during application, there was minimal fall off, which is great for when I work on brides and models. It means less mess and it saves me time.
  • The pigments are soft and easy to apply. This makes blending super easy and it helps to create a smooth natural look.
  • The combination of eyeshadow colours are fantastic, there’s a balance between neutrals, shimmer and dark. This allows you the freedom to create basic everyday looks or add a bit of drama when necessary for a night out. You’ll see in the swatch that the two neutral colours are extremely neutral and blends in beautifully with my skin. You can just swipe over the eyelid if you’re in a hurry.
  • A neutral lip glaze was also included in this kit, which I surprisingly love. It glides smoothly over any lipstick colour, doesn’t get too sticky and the glossiness is long-lasting.

The Smitten Eye Palette is available from MUD studios (or order through me #yourewelcome) and retails for R650.

MUD (Make-Up Designory) is a make-up academy founded in 1997 in North Hollywood, California. Their focus is training students in make-up artistry and they offer a line of pro-quality make-up artistry product – win! The best part of all is that their make-up is cruelty-free – win for every-bunny!

Keen on buying an eyeshadow palette? Here are two things to consider when shopping for a palette:

  1. Quiet your inner unicorn

I completely get why you would want all the amazing unicorn-rainbow colours known to man (cause they’re purrrty…) but if you’re not going to use it every day is it really worth it? Instead invest in a palette that balances the neutral with the fun. You’ll get the most use out of this kind of palette and it also makes packing for a holiday super easy.

  1. Do your homework

Don’t fall for all the hype. Do your research when buying a new eyeshadow palette, this is an investment in your make-up bag after all. Ask your friends that are into make-up if they can recommend anything or even ask a make-up artist. We don’t mind sharing our secrets… You can consider pro make-up brands like MUD as one of our insider secrets – their products are specifically designed for make-up artists, meaning high quality, while also being available to the public.

My Winter Skincare Routine

My Winter Skincare Routine

I know that many of you might be thinking that we’re on our way out of winter but if this cold front we just had is anything to go by (and I hear there are some more on the way) then we need to talk about winter skincare. I often struggle with tightness this time of the year that could suggest a compromised skin barrier. The skin barrier helps keep our skin happy i.e. moisturised and hydrated among a few other things, which could explain the tight feeling. Winter really likes to suck the fun and moisture out of many things including my skin.

So how do I combat that unwanted tightness? Here’s my day and night routine:

DAY

I double cleanse my face with Neostrata’s Clarifying Cleanser. It’s soap free so it won’t strip my face of any essential lipids that are necessary for a healthy barrier while the gel formula still deep cleans my skin for a clean slate.

Then I apply the Neostrata Ultra Day Time Smoothing Cream. It contains Glycolic and other Alpha Hydroxy Acids that help exfoliate and target fine lines AND pigmentation. What’s great is that it has an SPF 20, but for added protection I’ll add a layer of Heliocare 360 Fluid Cream SPF 50. I also like using an eye cream during the day. This area can really get dry during the winter – Neostrata’s Bionic Eye Cream Plus takes away dark circles and puffiness thanks to the vitamin K in it.

NIGHT

I make sure to remove all my make-up first using Sorbet’s Salon Skin 3-in-1 Cleansing Micellar Water. Then I’ll double cleanse using the Neostra Clarifying Cleanser using luke warm water, pat dry and apply the Neostrata Renewal Cream. It’s a targeted night treatment cream that contains a form of vitamin A and vitamin E to address all my anti-ageing concerns. I’ll finish it off with a dab of eye cream before I get into bed.

I try to keep my skin routine simple and use products with active ingredients that work hard to address my skin concerns. I also love adding a serum or booster specifically formulated to address dryness, like Dermalogica’s Skin Hydrating Booster around the eyes and lips where I tend to dry out easily.

Why Neostrata?

I use to struggle with acne and oily skin. Since using the Neostra range specific to my skin concerns, my skin has cleared up completely. My pores have become smaller and I have glowing skin without all the oiliness.

Winter Skincare Tips

Use products that are gentle on your skin, especially when it’s feeling stressed. Seek the advice of a skincare therapist if necessary.

Don’t underestimate the power of a double cleanse using lukewarm water.

And lastly always wear sunscreen, even if you work in an office with no natural sunlight.

How to clean your makeup brushes

How to clean your makeup brushes

Do makeup brushes really need to be cleaned regularly? The short answer is YES!

Washing your face with angel tears and moisturising it with jars of unicorn dreams won’t mean anything if you’re using dirty makeup brushes on a daily basis. Consider cleaning your makeup brushes as part of a good skincare routine. Over time dirt, dust and bacteria build up between the bristles and could expose your skin and eyes to nasty infections. Not only that, but it could cause brake-outs and skin irritations. From a more functional aspect, clean makeup brushes also improve your makeup application. So, if your makeup is looking a bit meh, and you haven’t cleaned your brushed in a while, it’s time to get washing.

How often should you clean your brushes?

As a professional makeup artist, I clean my own brushes at least once a week with a quick dry brush cleaner called Blends Beauty Product’s Quick Fix Brush Cleaner – it works like charm! I also give them a thorough wash with soap and water every second week. You don’t have to go out and buy a special brush soap to clean your brushes, baby shampoo works just as well. However, Blends Beauty Products Brush Wash & Sanitizer is my go to at the moment.

If you use foundation brushes or sponges for full coverage and eyeshadow brushes on a daily basis, you’ll need to wash them at least once every second week. If you feel like it’s too much then at least try once a month. Not only will your skin be much happier but you’ll also find that application and blending will be much smoother.

How to clean your brushes

For on the go cleaning use the I clean mine with Blends Beauty Product’s Quick Fix Brush Cleaner. Spritz some Quick Fix Brush Cleaner onto the bristles and swipe them over a paper towel to get rid of excess product.

For a deep clean, I start off by soaking the bristles in water but take care not to get the base of the bristles wet. I then lather some Blends Beauty Products Brush Wash & Sanitizer into the bristles and gently massage it using a silicone brush cleaning mat. These mats make the cleaning process so much better –  it’s texturized and really helps to get the soap in between all the bristles for a better clean. A few years ago they were only available through high-end pro-brush companies and were super expensive, but lately I’ve spotted some more affordable options at Clicks and Dischem.

Rinse and repeat until the bristles run clear under clean water. Lightly squeeze out the excess water and pat with a clean dry towel. After cleaning lay them out on a towel (at a slight angle if possible) over-night to dry. Whatever you do, don’t pop them back into their pretty brush container to dry standing up. The excess water will run down into the metal shaft and loosen the glue that holds the bristles together.

And there you go! Doing this regularly will also make your brushes last longer and keep it in a good condition.

Embracing The Winter Lip Trend

Embracing The Winter Lip Trend

Deep decadent lip colours can seem intimidating at first, but once you’ve embraced the berry hues you’ll never turn back. Berry lips can easily transform your whole make-up look and take you from pasty to daring in just a few swipes. Play around and have some fun figuring out what hue and formulation works best for you. Make-up should not be serious business, it’s a creative extension of your personality of which I’m sure there are many dimensions. I love it when brides like to be a bit more daring and opt for a darker shade on their wedding day. It photographs beautifully and creates a bit of drama, which is something you want for the big day.

So, what are my go to colours and formulations?

I don’t go anywhere without a good quality lip stain. I either wear it on its own for a more toned down look or I can add a creamy lip colour in the same hue underneath it for a bolder look. The lip stain helps to seal in the colour and keep everything intact throughout the day. No smudging, smearing or bleeding into fine lines.

My go-to lip colours at the moment are Smashbox Always on Matte Lipstick in Vino Noir, Kryolan Lipstain in Gospel and Rock and Stilla Stay All Day Matte’ificent in Framboise. I really love a deep wine coloured or burgundy lip, but you can never go wrong with deep pinks and of course a classic red lip.

All Ages Welcome

One of the biggest makeup myths is that you can’t wear darker lip colours once you’ve passed a certain age. Women like Maye Musk, Carmen Dell Orefice and locally our own Jackie Burger know that you don’t need to be young to sport a berry lip. As long as you find the right shade and formulation, there is no reason why you can’t wear darker hues.

Prep the Lips

Make sure the lips are properly prepped before application because this will determine how the colour wears throughout the day. If you’re opting for a matte formulation this is even more important – dry flaky lips do not go well with matte lipsticks. Lightly exfoliate your lips and then apply a moisturising balm before applying the lip colour. If you’re worried that the balm might make the lip colour slip, you can lightly dab away the oil before application.

It’s All About Balance

Unless it’s evening make-up, and even then, it’s all about balancing out the look. Try not to go too heavy with your eye makeup when you wear your bold lip. One focus point at a time.

The X-factor

Lastly and maybe most importantly – wear it with confidence. If you’re going to be self-conscious, constantly pursing your lips, touching it and asking a friend every 5 minutes if it still looks okay, the look will wear you down. It’s all about embracing the statement and owning it.

Put In the Time & Effort

If you really want to invest in finding the right shade and formulation it’s worth putting in some time and maybe a bit more cash. Read reviews, ask friends what they’re wearing (or even a stranger) and spend time in the make-up isle or at the make-up counter. One good quality lipstick or stain will last you the whole season.

Now it’s your turn – what are your favourite winter lip colours and formulations?

The Capsule Wardrobe

The Capsule Wardrobe

It seems that every month our budgets get a little bit tighter, expenses get higher and the fashion trends keep on coming with absolutely no indication to slow down whatsoever. It used to be that we had four seasons that could easily be grouped together as Spring/Summer and Autumn/Winter, which by the way is the format the big fashion houses still use. However, fast fashion and big brand retail stores have helped to create a relentless cycle of 52 micro-seasons that each has their own trend. So if you’re stuck with a bomber jacket you’ve only worn twice and a netted dress situation you thought looked good when you tried it on – you can blame it on the trends from 2016 and the fast fashion industry. Fast forward a few seasons and you’re stuck with an overflowing closet and nothing to wear. This is where the capsule wardrobe enters and I promise it will make life so much better.

So let’s get started…

What is a Capsule Wardrobe (CW)?

Trends are great, but it’s not always functional. With a CW you’ll have the freedom to easily put together great looking outfits every morning and still look (and feel) great. It focusses more on style and less on fashion, which should ultimately be your goal.
Think of it as a mini wardrobe consisting of versatile pieces that you can mix and match no matter what the occasion. A CW helps you to get more from your wardrobe with fewer clothes and essentially it’s a minimalist way of downsizing your closet into something truly functional.

Who needs a CW?

Really everyone needs a CW, but it’s especially for someone that feels overwhelmed by their over-stuffed closet and no idea what to wear every morning. A CW will help you save time and money while still looking good. It’s all about wearing quality pieces that are carefully styled and completed with curated accessories.
You can still have fun with a CW and experiment with trends, but your CW will be your foundation and you’ll be able to seamlessly transition from every season and look good while doing it. The CW is for any shape, personality, age and gender.

What are the advantages of having a CW?

The most obvious advantage of a CW is of course that it’s a quick and easy way to put an outfit together. It takes away the frustration of going through like a gazillion items each morning to get dressed.

We all have that one friend that always looks put together and stylish without ever adhering to the season’s biggest trends. Her secret weapon is probably a CW, but that doesn’t mean that she ignores trends, she just knows which ones speak to her personal style and how to incorporate them with her basics to go with each season. It’s the best way to make that trend your own. It fits your style personality, your lifestyle, body shape skin tone and hair colour.

With a CW you buy what you actually need and not necessarily what’s in fashion, which is a good thing in the end. You’ll save so much money which you put aside for that investment piece you’ve eyed for like forever. Most women only wear 20% of the clothes in their closet, while the other 80% are just taking up unnecessary space and making you feel anxious. Think about it like this: If one item cost on average R300, how much money is just gathering dust in your cupboard?

Lastly, your closet will be less cluttered, you’ll have more space, feel less stressed and you’re closet and style will be simplified.

What winter basics can take you through from winter to summer?

These items should be the basics of your capsule for each season.
– You can’t go wrong with a pair of fitted jeans that compliment your body shape.
– A beautiful dress that fits your shape and style. At the moment I love a long floral dress. You can dress it up or down in winter and summer. Changing a couple of accessories, shoes etc and it can work for any occasion.
– A well-tailored jacket is a must and it that can transition from winter to summer.
